Editorial Policies

Aim and Scope

The most important objectives of the journal are: generalization of scientific and practical achievements in forestry, breeding, landscaping, ecology, woodworking and chemical processing of plant raw materials, improvement of scientific and practical qualification of specialists in these areas.

The scientific concept of the journal implies the publication of modern achievements and results of national and international scientific researches.

Both domestic and foreign scientists working in forestry, breeding, landscaping, ecology, woodworking and chemical processing of plant raw materials, as well as related specialties are invited to publish in the journal.

The journal “Conifers of the boreal area” publishes the results of original (not previously published) researches aimed at solving fundamental and applied issues.

This is an open access journal. All articles are made freely available to readers immediatly upon publication.

Our open access policy is in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) definition - it means that articles have free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself.

Peer-Review

Procedure for reviewing manuscripts of research articles submitted to the Editorial Board of the journal “Conifers of the boreal area”

  1. All of the research articles submitted to the journal should be reviewed.
  2. Editor-in-Chief and Executive secretary of the journal determine whether the article corresponds to the journal profile and design demands and send it to be reviewed by the specialist, doctor of science or candidate of science of the close scientific field.
  3. Reviewers are notified of the responsibility of data confidentiality containing in the manuscripts. Reviewers are not allowed to copy the articles. The review is confidential. The period of reviewing is defined by the Executive secretary.
  4. The review should contain: a) correspondence of the content of the article to its title, b) extent of correspondence of the article to the contemporary achievements in the field of science regarded, c) estimation of the presentation form of the material, d) expediency of the article publishing, e) detailed description of the advantages and disadvantages of the article.
  5. Reviews are verified according to the rules of the reviewer residence organization.
  6. Articles are reviewed anonymously. Author has the possibility to read the text of the review. Anonymity violation is possible only in case if the reviewer declares of plagiarism or falsification of the materials given in the article.
  7. If the review contains recommendations for correction and revision of the article, the Executive Secretary of the journal sends the text of the review to the author with a proposal to take into account the recommendations when preparing a new version of the article or to refute them with arguments. The article revised by the author is sent for review again.
  8. In case when the reviewer does not recommend the article for publishing the Editorial Board can send it for revision by the author as well as for the review by another reviewer. The text of the negative review is sent to the author.
  9. The final decision on the publication of the article is made by the Editorial Board of the journal and is written in the records of the meeting of the Editorial Board. The presence of a positive review is not a sufficient basis for the publication of the article.
  10. If the article is agreed for publishing by the Editorial Board the Executive Secretary informs the author about the period of publishing. The text of review is sent to the author.
  11. Originals of the reviews are stored at the Editorial Board office for 5 years.

 

Publishing Ethics

The future of the science and the scientific publishing is mostly dependent on the respect both to the law regulations and the principles of ethical interaction of the participants of the research and editorial communities. It guaranties the quality increase of the research publications as well as the successful development of the collaboration of the authors, publishers and readers. The common experience of the ethical behaviour is collected into the united document Ethical Code (the Code) that was elaborated by the Committee on research publications ethics.

 

Main terms

Research publications ethics  is a system of rules for the professional behaviour of the authors, reviewers, editors, publishers and readers during the process of creating, distributing and using of the research publications.

Editor  is a representative of the research journal or publishing house who is in charge of preparing the materials for the publications and dealing with authors and readers.

Author  is a person or group of people (a group of authors) involved in creating a publication about the results of a research study.

Reviewer  is an expert acting on behalf of the research journal or publishing house who conducts an expertise of the author manuscripts aiming the opportunity to publish.

Publisher  is a corporate or physical body issuing the publications.

Reader  is any person having acquainted with the published materials.

Plagiarism  is a willful/intended appropriation of the authorship of the other people’s pieces of science or art, ideas or inventions. Plagiarism can be the violation of the copyright and patent laws and implies the legal liability.

 

Principles of the professional ethics in the editor and publisher activity

In his activity, the publisher is responsible for the publication of the author’s manuscripts, which imposes the need to follow the following fundamental principles:

  • In decision of publishing the editor of the research journal is guided by the authenticity of the data and the significance of the manuscript.
  • The editor has to estimate the intellectual content of the manuscripts regardless of the race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, origin, social position and political preferences of the authors.
  • Unpublished data obtained from the manuscripts should not be used for personal intent and given to the third part without the written agreement of the author. Information or ideas obtained during the editing and connected with possible advantages should be preserved confidential and not be used for personal intent.
  • The editor should not accept to the publishing the information if it is supposed plagiarism.
  • The editor together with the publisher should not leave unanswered the claims concerning the considered manuscripts or published materials, and also in case of revealing a conflict situation to take all necessary measures to restore the violated rights.

 

Ethical principles in reviewer activity

Reviewer examines the manuscripts, thus, his actions should be unbiased according to the following principles:

  • Manuscript submitted for review is a confidential document that should not be given for reviewing and discussing to the third part without authorities delegated from the editorial staff.
  • Reviewer should give an unbiased and reasoned estimation to the given results of research. A personal critic of the author is unacceptable.
  • Unpublished data obtained from the submitted manuscripts should not be used by the reviewer for personal intent.
  • Reviewer who does not have from his point of view enough qualification for the manuscripts estimation or cannot be unbiased should inform the editor about this fact and ask for excluding from the manuscript reviewing, i.e. in case of the conflict of interests with the author or organization.

 

Principles that should be followed by the author of scientific publications

The author (or a group of authors) realizes his responsibility for the novelty and authenticity of the research results that implies the following principles:

  • Authors should submit the authentic results of the research done. Intentionally erroneous or falsified statements are unacceptable.
  • Authors should guarantee that the results given in submitted manuscript are completely original. Borrowed fragments or statements should be arranged with links to the author and original. Unreasonable borrowings and plagiarism including the unarranged citations, paraphrasing or appropriation of the research results are unacceptable.
  • The contributions of all individuals who have influenced the research in one way or another should be recognised, in particular, the paper should provide references to papers that were of significance in the conduct of the research.
  • The authors should not submit the manuscript that is already submitted to another journal or published in another journal.
  • All the persons made a significant contribution to a research should be mentioned as co-authors. Those who did not take part in research should not be mentioned.
  • Once the author finds out the significant mistakes or uncertainties in the article at the stage of review or after its publishing he has to inform the journal editorial board as soon as possible.

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.

 

Plagiarism detection

"Conifers of the boreal area" use native russian-language plagiarism detection software Antiplagiat to screen the submissions. If plagiarism is identified, the COPE guidelines on plagiarism will be followed.

 

Preprint and postprint Policy

Prior to acceptance and publication in "Conifers of the boreal area", authors may make their submissions available as preprints on personal or public websites.

As part of submission process, authors are required to confirm that the submission has not been previously published, nor has been submitted. After a manuscript has been published in "Conifers of the boreal area" we suggest that the link to the article on journal's website is used when the article is shared on personal or public websites.

Glossary (by SHERPA)

Preprint - In the context of Open Access, a preprint is a draft of an academic article or other publication before it has been submitted for peer-review or other quality assurance procedure as part of the publication process. Preprints cover initial and successive drafts of articles, working papers or draft conference papers.
 
Postprint - The final version of an academic article or other publication - after it has been peer-reviewed and revised into its final form by the author. As a general term this covers both the author's final version and the version as published, with formatting and copy-editing changes in place.

 

Revenue Sources

The publication of the journal is financed by the funds of the parent organization, at the expense of the publisher, publication of advertising materials, publication of reprints, article processment charges.
